فإذاand when تَحَلَّبَlets down milk فَاضَتِoverflow الأطْبَاءُthe teats
Its teats grew numerous with the abundance of its rain;
and when it lets down milk, the teats overflow.
وَضُروعَهُand its udders عَدَدَas numerous as النُجومِthe stars وَطَلُّهُand its drizzle
أَخلافُهُits teats عَدَدَas numerous as النُجومِthe stars رِواءُbrimming full
And its udders number the stars; its fine rain flows
from teats as many as the stars, brimming full.
وَكَجَوْفِand like the hollow of َضَرَّتِهِits udder's body التيwhich فيin جَوْفِهِits belly

And like the hollow of its udder within its belly
is heaven's vault; the cloud is vast and hollow-bellied.
وَلَهُand it has أرَبَابٌlingering rain هَيْدَبٌlong-fringed لِرَفِيقِهِfor its gentle rain

And it has lingering, trailing rain; its gentle fall,
before the cloudburst, is a dense, steady shower.

And its lightning seems a blaze where meet
wind blowing upon it, ʿarfaj, and alāʾ shrubs.
وكأَنَّand as though رَيِّقَهُits first appearance ولمَّاand not yet يَحْتَفِلْgathers fully

And its first wisps, not yet fully gathered,
seem a murky dust cloud beneath the sky.

Laughing with flashes, weeping
through tear ducts no specks of grit have stirred.
فَلَهُso it has بِلاَwithout حَزَنٍsorrow وَلاَnor بِمَسَرَّةٍwith joy
ضَحِكٌlaughter يُؤَلِّفُit brings together بَيْنَهُbetween it وبُكَاءُand weeping
So it has, without sorrow or joy,
laughter and weeping that it mingles together.

وَجَنُوبُهand its south wind كِنْفٌa shelter لَهُfor it وَوِعَاءُand a vessel
Bewildered, it follows its east wind, which leads it;
and its south wind is its shelter and vessel.
وَدَنَتْand drew near لَهُto it نَكْبَاؤُهُits crosswind حَتَّىuntil إذَاwhen

And its crosswind drew near it, until,
after the crosswind had long played with it,

وَعَلىand over البُحورِthe seas مِنَof السَّحابِcloud سِجَاءُa covering
the cloud dissolved, and all of it became a sea;
and over the seas lies a covering of cloud.

Its kidneys grew heavy, and its loins gushed;
and its entrails burst open with its water.

Rain-rich, it brings forth in gravelly valleys she-camels in labor,
that bear torrents, with no afterbirths.

White-blazed, white-socked, heavy-laden, entrusted with
the burden of milch camels, though all are virgins.

Dark-hued; when they hold back their rain, they are coal-black,
black, yet radiant when they laugh.

Were its water from the depths off the coasts,
no water would remain in the depths off the coasts.
