    When annihilation numbed my lament,

and made me drink its cups that bring forgetting,

poetry sent forth from itself a breeze,

fragrant with perfume, sweet in its notes.

It stirred youth's sail and woke my thoughts,

so the ship of memories sped away with me

across the ocean of thoughts, carrying me through time,

and yearning toward the shores of life.

Whenever it tried to return to them,

the surging depths drove it from one into another.

The wind danced in its sail until

it shattered it, and shattered both its sides.

Mercy from you, O winds, and gentleness!

Leave it, and whoever mourns over it.

For in life he has hopes like lightning,

that travel with him by night through its shores' darkness.

You gaze at the two shores through tears,

    grieving; scarcely anything is visible

except a light glimmering like a flash; clouds are rent

above it, and it lies hidden within them.

And a radiance shines upon it like a rainbow's hue,

    dim against the darkness, faint.

It is the love of those who have remembered him,

whom longing has grieved after parting.

The clamor of life reaches him as a whisper,

as an unborn child hears rumbling.

The din of storms passes through him,

resembling a breeze in the slumber of death.

And the tumult of days sounds like a bell,

    faintly, stealing toward him, indistinct.

Forever, in death, it whispers on—

their echo, ceaseless in his ear.

And amid the echoes, a tender voice,

wandering amid the uproar of storms,

    leaps beyond the hurricanes' fury,

heedless of the terror of this annihilation.

And it has a paradise that death echoes,

like a secret whisper from the world of the living.

The ear strains toward it, then relaxes

in a daze that answers with closed eyes.

    It is love, still enduring

every terror, and riding every hardship.

    جي وَيَطوي سَهلاً خَصيباً لِجَدبِ

    Rock crouches within it, and the dark tunnel;

and it crosses a fertile plain toward barrenness.

To it, all are alike: the intractable

or the docile along the road.

    It never fears contention,

nor dreads death along any path.

Ah, love, where will you go when

death has woven nets around you,

and you send honeyed, bewildered breaths

    toward it, confiding your complaint?

Do you think, O passion, you will brave death

and, like the soul, meet your doom at its hands?

Or will you remain until it sees you as a hunter

in the groves of paradise, shooting there?

The soul inclines toward evils, and loves

elements of them within the spirit.

Evil is only a refuge for its grief,

were it bereft of the sanctity of praise.

From it the soul gains room to swim and fly,

at peace above the sky's expanse.

And, like love, it is abundance and growth,

a pasture for the spirit, wide in its spaces.

O love, you are death to death,

victorious over decay, though held in scorn.

You are the twin of life, the heiress of death,

and a light that flutters over God.

You will remain after annihilation, swimming freely

in a translucent expanse of ether,

watching the universe in death's slumber,

like a vision swooping with it and fluttering.

Ah, Time, slow down! Where am I going,

    wandering upon these waves,

    aboard a broken-winged vessel, struck

by the blast of calamities, while night is dark,

in an ocean where storms thunder,

mourning the tranquil light of suns,

raging over it, embracing the waves,

and racing with no upward path?
