غَداًtomorrow ياO خَياليmy imagination تَنتَهيends ضَحِكاتُناour laughter
وَآلامُناand our pains تَفنىperish وَتَفنىand perish المَشاعِرُfeelings
Tomorrow, O my imagination, our laughter will end.
And our pains will perish, and feelings will perish.
وَتُسلِمُناand surrender us أَيديthe hands الحَياةِof life إِلىto البِلىdecay
وَيَحكُمُand passes judgment فيناon us المَوتُdeath وَالمَوتُand death جائِرُunjust
And the hands of life will surrender us to decay.
And death will pass judgment on us—and death is unjust.
جَلَستُI sat عَلىupon الصَخرِthe rock الوَحيدِsolitary وَحيداًalone
وَأَرسَلتُand sent forth طَرفيmy gaze فيinto الفَضاءِthe vastness شَريداwandering
I sat alone upon the solitary rock.
And sent my gaze wandering into the vastness.
وَكَفكَفتُand wiped away دَمعاًtears لاnot يُكَفكَفُis checked غَربُهُits torrent
وَواسَيتُand consoled قَلباًa heart فيwithin الضُلوعِthe ribs عَميداstricken
And wiped away tears whose torrent cannot be checked.
And consoled a heart stricken within my ribs.
أَرىI see صَفحَةَthe page الآمالِof hopes قَدhas ضاقَnarrowed أُفقُهاits horizon
وَلاحَand appeared عَلىover اليَأسِdespair البَعيدِdistant مَديداfar-stretching
I see the page of hopes: its horizon has narrowed,
And it looms, stretching far over distant despair.
لَقَدindeed عِشتُI have lived فيin دُنياthe world الخَيالِof imagination مُعَذَّباًtormented
فَياso, O لَيتَwould that شِعريmy knowing هَلwhether أَموتُI die سَعيداhappy
Indeed, I have lived tormented in the world of imagination.
So, would that I knew: shall I die happy?
كَأَنَّas though حَياتيmy life غُنوَةٌa song بَدَوِيَّةٌBedouin
شَدَّتهاbound it اللَياليthe nights لِلقُرونِto the centuries بِلاwithout مَعنىmeaning
It is as though my life were a Bedouin song.
The nights have bound it to the centuries, without meaning.
كَأَنّيas though I أَناI فيهاwithin it شَجىthe sorrow نَغَماتِهاof its notes
أَقامَتestablished لَهاfor it ذِكرىa memory تَحُفُّsurrounds بِهاaround it الأُذُناthe ears
As though I myself were, within it, the sorrow of its notes;
They have given it a memory that ears enfold.
لَئِنeven if فاتَنيhas passed me by عَهدُthe season الشَبابِof youth وَلَهوُهُand its pleasures
فَإِنّيyet I بِعُمريabout my lifespan لَستُI am not آبَهُheedful أَوor أُعنىI am concerned
Even if youth's season and its pleasures have passed me by,
Yet I neither heed my lifespan nor concern myself with it.
فَرُبَّfor many a هَواءٍbreath of air طافَwandered فيthrough اللَحنِthe melody وَأَمَحّىand vanished
يُخَلَّدُis immortalized عَنbeyond ريحٍa wind مُعمِرَةٍlong-lived قَرناa century
For many a breath of air that wandered through the melody and vanished
Is immortalized, outlasting a wind that endures a century.
لَقَدindeed كُنتُI was فيin الدُنياthe world جَمالاًa beauty يَزينُهاadorns it
بِماwith what شادَهُbuilt it شِعريmy poetry عَلىupon هَذِهِthis الدُنياworld
Indeed, I was a beauty in the world, adorning it
With what my poetry built upon this world.
خَلَقتُI created لِروحيfor my soul سِحرَهاits magic لاnot لِغَيرِهاfor anything besides it
وَمِنand for أَجلِهاits sake أَقضيI die وَمِنand for أَجلِهاits sake أَحياI live
I created my soul's magic for it, not for any other.
And for its sake I die, and for its sake I live.
إِذاwhen ذَبُلَwithers النارِنجُthe bitter orange عاشَlives on عَبيرُهُits fragrance
وَكانَand there was لَهُfor it فيin الوَهمِfancy مِنfrom نَفحِهِits wafting scent مَحياa life
When the bitter orange withers, its fragrance lives on,
And in fancy it has a life through its wafting scent.
وَيَخلُدُand endures بَعدَafter البَدرِthe full moon فيin الفِكرِthought رَونَقٌa radiance
يُغَذّيnourishes خَياليmy imagination الشِعرَpoetry وَالحُبَّand love وَالوَحياand inspiration
And after the full moon, a radiance endures in thought,
Nourishing my imagination with poetry, love, and inspiration.
