هذاthis ضَجيجُthe clamor اللَياليthe nights
سُدَّتwere stopped up بِهِby it أُذُناكاyour two ears
This is the clamor of the nights;
This is the clamor of nights
your ears have been stopped up by it.
That has blocked your ears
فَلَستَso you do not تَسمَعُhear شَكوىa complaint
مِنfrom مُستَهامٍa lovesick one دَعاكاcalled to you
So you hear no complaint
So you do not hear the complaint
from a lovesick one who called to you.
Of one who implored you
وَأَنتَand you فيin ظُلمَةِthe darkness of النوthe light (first part)
رِcompletion of 'light' لاnot تَرىsee عَيناكاyour two eyes
And you are in the darkness of light—
While you are in the darkness of sleep
your eyes cannot see.
Your eyes do not see
فَماso ... not تَكادُyou almost تَرانيsee me
فيin حينِthe time أَنّيthat I أَراكاsee you
So you scarcely see me,
So you almost do not see me
while I see you.
When I do see you
هذاthis مَدايَmy reach قَريبٌnear
فَأَينَso where مِنّيfrom me مَداكاyour reach
This is my reach, close at hand;
My abode is near
then how far from me is your reach?
So where is your abode from me
أَكبَرتَyou deemed too great وَصليunion with me دَلالاًin coyness
وَأَكبَرتُand I revered ذِكراكاremembrance of you
In coyness, you deemed union with me too much,
You have grown, so I pray out of love
while I revered the memory of you.
And I have grown in remembering you
حُبيكَmy love for you فيin الأَرضِthe earth لكِنbut
فَوقَabove الثَرىthe soil مَثواكاyour dwelling
My love for you is on earth, but
My love for you is on earth
your dwelling is above the soil.
But your dwelling is above the ground
لَكِنَّنيbut I مِنfrom غراميmy passion
وَحيرَتيand my bewilderment فيin هَواكاlove for you
Yet I, out of my passion
But from my passion
and my bewilderment in loving you,
And confusion in loving you
صَوَّرتُI fashioned مِنكَof you خَيالاًan imagined image
مَتىwhenever أَراهُI see it أَراكاI see you
fashioned an image of you:
I imagined you
whenever I see it, I see you.
Whenever I see you I see you
لاmay ... not نالَattain قَلبيmy heart مُناهُits desire
إِنif كانَhas قَلبيmy heart سَلاكاforgotten you
May my heart never attain its desire
My heart did not attain tranquility
if my heart has forgotten you!
If my heart was receptive
أَنتَyou الَّذيwho تَتَجَنّىact unjustly
مُعَذِّباًtormenting مُضناكاthe one you have worn down
You are the one who acts unjustly,
You are the one who is delicate
tormenting the one you have worn down.
Tormenting me, exhausting me
فَماso ... not لَقيتُكَI met you إِلّاexcept
كَماas اِلتَقىmet جَفناكاyour two eyelids
So I have met you only
So I did not find you
as your two eyelids meet.
Except as my eyelids met
ياO ذاهِلاًone oblivious عَنto غَراميmy passion
تَدَلُّلاًout of coyness رُحماكاyour mercy, I beg
O you, oblivious to my passion
O negligent about my passion
out of coyness—your mercy, I beg!
Pampered, have mercy
خَلَّفتَyou left جِسماًa body طَريحاًprostrate
لاnot يَستَطيعُcan حِراكاmovement
You have left a body prostrate,
You left a powerless body
unable to move.
That cannot move
لكِنَّهُbut it مِنfrom هَواهُits love
يَطيرُit flies حينَwhen يَراكاit sees you
Yet from its love
But from its love for you
it flies when it sees you.
It flies when it sees you
مَلَأتَyou filled قَلبِيَmy heart حُبّاًwith love
وَلَمand did not أَعُدcontinue to أَهواكاlove you
You filled my heart with love,
You have filled my heart with love
and I no longer love you.
And I do not love you anymore
فَلَوso if طَلَبتَyou asked مَزيداًmore
لَماthen ... not أَصبَتَyou attained مُناكاyour desire
So, if you asked for more,
So if you sought more
you would not attain your desire.
You would not find comfort
ياO واحِداًa peerless one فيin عُلاهُhis loftiness
تَحِيَّةًa greeting فيin عُلاكاyour loftiness
O peerless one in his loftiness,
O singular in your sublimity
a greeting in your loftiness!
Greetings in your loftiness
لَقَدindeed تَرَقَّقتَyou grew delicate حَتّىuntil
شابَهتَyou resembled مِنّيfrom me هَواكاlove for you
Indeed, you have grown so delicate that
You have become so gentle
you resemble my love for you.
That you resemble my love
فَلَوso if تَحَوَّلتَyou turned into نوراًlight
لكانَwould have طَرفيmy gaze اِحتَواكاencompassed you
So, if you had turned into light,
If you transformed into light
my gaze would have encompassed you.
My gaze would contain you
وَلَوand if تَحَوَّلتَyou turned into خَمراًwine
لكانَwould have ثَغريmy mouth اِحتِساكاsipped you
And if you had turned into wine,
And if you transformed into wine
my mouth would have sipped you.
My mouth would absorb you
وَلَوand if تَحَوَّلتَyou turned into رَوضاًa garden
وَقَدand already نَشَرتَyou spread شَذاكاyour fragrance
And if you had turned into a garden,
And if you transformed into a garden
and had spread your fragrance,
Spreading your fragrance
لكُنتُI would have been فيهِin it فَراشاًa butterfly
أَرُفُّI flutter حَولَaround سَناكاyour radiance
I would have been a butterfly within it,
I would be in it a butterfly
fluttering around your radiance,
Fluttering around your radiance
وَكُنتُand I would have قَضَيتُspent عُمريmy lifetime
أَحسوI sip رَحيقَthe nectar of جَناكاyour fruit
and I would have spent my lifetime
And I would spend my life
sipping the nectar of your fruit.
Savoring the nectar of your paradise
