وَاِترُكيand let نورَكِyour light يَهديguides العالَمينthe worlds
Shine forth like dawn, with radiant brow.
Shine like the dawn, fair of brow,
And let your light guide all the worlds.
And let your light guide the worlds.
وَاِطلَعيand rise فيin لَيلِthe night حُزنيmy sorrow كَوكَباًa star
تَعصِمينيyou shield me مِنfrom ضَلالِstraying العاشِقينthe lovers
And rise as a star in the night of my sorrow,
Rise in my night of sorrow like a star,
To shield me from the straying of lovers.
Save me from the misguidance of lovers.
وَاِطرَحيand cast فيinto قَفرِbarren waste عُمريmy life زَهرَةًa flower
عَلَّهاperhaps it تَنموgrows وَتَزكوand flourishes بَعدَafter حينa while
And cast a flower into my life's barren waste,
Scatter in the waste of my life a flower—
Perhaps it will grow and flourish after a while.
May it grow and bloom after a time!
وَاِبسُميand smile تَبسُمَmay smile لَناfor us بَيضُwhite المُنىthe hopes
وَاِضحَكيand laugh تَضحَكmay laugh لَناfor us غُرُّradiant السِنينthe years
And smile, that white hopes may smile upon us;
Smile for us the smile of white wishes,
And laugh, that radiant years may laugh for us.
Laugh for us the laugh of tender years.
هاbehold هُوَit اللَيلُthe night كَماjust as كانَwas بَداappeared
يَحمِلُcarries الحُزنَsorrow لِقَلبيto my heart وَالحَنينand longing
Here is the night, as it appeared before,
Bearing sorrow for my heart and yearning.
Carrying sorrow and longing to my heart.
The temple of sorrows in its shrine
هَيكَلُa temple الأَحزانِsorrows فيin مِحرابِهِits sanctuary
قَرَّبَoffered up العُشّاقَthe lovers قُربانَa sacrifice العُيونthe eyes
A temple of sorrows; in its sanctuary
Brought lovers near as an offering of eyes.
It has offered lovers as a sacrifice to the eyes.
Its fragrance, sorrows of dewy flowers,
عُطرُهُits fragrance أَحزانُsorrows أَزهارِthe flowers الرُباthe hills
وَنَداهُand its dew عَبَراتُtears البائِسينthe wretched
Its fragrance is the sorrows of the flowers on the hills,
Its call, the sighs of the wretched.
And its dew the tears of the wretched.
The breeze wandered through its depths—
وَسَرىand drifted النَسمُthe breeze فيin أَحشائِهِits entrails
مُهَجٌhearts ذابَتmelted وَأَرواحٌand souls فَنَينperished
And the breeze drifted through its depths:
Melted passions and spirits that pine.
Hearts that melted, and souls that perished.
Everything is laid low by love’s law—
كُلُّevery شَيءٍthing هانَbecame insignificant فيin شَرعِthe law الهَوىlove
ياO مَلاكيmy angel وَالهَوىand love لَيسَdoes not يَهونbecome insignificant
All things count for little under love's law,
My angel, and love cannot be easy.
O my angel, yet love does not count for little.
The night saw only a daughter of passion
لَمdid not يَرَsee اللَيلُthe night سِوىexcept بِنتِa daughter هَوىًlove
قَرَأَتshe read ماwhat سَتُعانيshe will suffer فيon الجَبينthe brow
Night saw only a daughter of love,
Who read what would be written on her brow.
Who read upon the brow what she would suffer.
She wore at its beginning the garb of passion,
لَبِسَتshe wore فيat بَدئِهِits beginning ثَوبَa robe الهَوىlove
وَبِأُخراهُand at its end ثِيابَgarments النادِمينthe remorseful
At its beginning she donned love's robe,
And at its end the clothes of the regretful.
And at its end the garments of the remorseful.
A leader spent the night twisting and turning,
وَعَميدٌand a lovesick man باتَspent the night مَطوِيَfolded الحَشاthe innards
فيin سُكونِstillness اللَيلِthe night مَبحوحَhoarse الأَنينthe moaning
And a lovesick man who passed the night, his heart drawn tight,
In the stillness of the night, moaning in anguish.
In the stillness of night, hoarse with moaning.
He rose in the night like a vanishing specter,
قامَhe rose فيin اللَيلِthe night كَطَيفٍlike a phantom غابِرٍbygone
وَكَأَنَّand as though اللَيلَthe night مِحرابُa sanctuary القُرونthe ages
He rose in the night like a phantom from the past,
As if the night were the shrine of centuries.
And as though the night were the sanctuary of the ages.
A singer overcome by sorrow
وَمُغَنٍّand a singer غَلَبَprevailed الحُزنُsorrow عَلىover
وَتَرِthe string اللَهوِmerriment لَدَيهِwith him وَالمَجونand wantonness
And a singer—sorrow prevailed over
For whom revelry and amusement before him had vanished.
His string of merriment and wantonness.
His mind knows not what melody it plays—
لَيسَdoes not يَدريknow فِكرُهُhis mind ماwhat لَحنُهُhis melody
وَهوَand it رَجعُan echo السِحرِenchantment مِنfrom ماضٍa past شَطونfar-off
His mind does not know what his melody is,
It is the return of dawn from a bygone revelry.
And it is the echo of enchantment from a distant past.
O night, we came to complain—
أَيُّهاO اللَيلُnight أَتَيناwe have come نَشتَكيwe complain
فَاِستَمَعso listen شَكوىthe lament الحَزانىthe sorrowful المُتعَبينthe weary
O night, we have come to complain,
So listen to the plaint of the weary sorrowful.
So listen to the lament of the sorrowful and weary.
Sorrow has led us astray and sorrow has weakened us,
هَدَّناshattered us الحُزنُsorrow وَأَضناناand wore us out الأَسىgrief
وَبَراناand wore us thin الوَجدُlonging فيin دُنياa world الشُجونsorrows
Sorrow has shattered us, and grief has worn us out,
And passion has tested us in the world of agonies.
And longing has worn us thin in a world of sorrows.
We complained to you and came to complain
قَدindeed شَكَوناكَwe complained of you وَجِئناand we came نَشتَكيwe complain
لَكَto you شَيئاًsomething مِنof خَيالِimagination الذاهِلينthe bewildered
We have complained of you, and have come to complain
To you of something from the imaginings of the heedless.
To you of something from the imaginings of the bewildered.
O night, I recount a love
إِنَّنيindeed I ياO لَيلُnight أَحكيI resemble غُنوَةًa song
فَنِيَتperished فيكَin you عَلىover مَرِّthe passing السِنينthe years
Indeed, O night, I am like a song
That faded in you over the course of years,
That perished in you with the passing of the years,
And turned into a ruin in decay
وَاِستَحالَتand became فيin البَلىdecay قُبَّرَةًa lark
تَتَغَنّىsings فيin دُجىdarkness واديthe valley المَنونdeath
And in decay became a lark,
That sings in the gloom of the valley of oblivion.
Singing in the darkness of the valley of death.
O night, I recount a bundle
إِنَّنيindeed I ياO لَيلُnight أَحكيI resemble حُزمَةًa bundle
مِنof شُعاعٍradiance فيin سَماءِthe sky الحالِمينthe dreamers
Indeed, O night, I am like a bundle
Of rays in the sky of dreamers
Of radiance in the dreamers' sky.
Which tremendous thought folded toward you,
ضَمَّهاgathered it نَحوَكَtoward you فِكرٌa thought هائِلٌtremendous
أَزعَجَalarmed الأَربابَthe gods بَينَamong الثائِرينthe rebels
A tremendous thought drew it toward you,
Disturbing the lords among the defiant.
And alarmed the gods among the rebels.
It turned into a boat crossed
وَاِستَحالَتand became زَورَقاًa skiff تَعبُرُهُtraverse it
فَزَعاتُterrors المَوتِdeath لَيلاًat night مِنsince سَنينyears
And it became a skiff, traversed
By the panics of death by night over years.
By death's terrors at night, for years.
This is my song I chanted it
هذِهِthis أُغنِيَتيmy song رَتَّلتُهاI chanted it
لَكِfor you ياO دُنيايَmy world فيin ديرِa monastery السُكونstillness
This is my song; I chanted it
For you, O my world, in the monastery of stillness.
For you, O my world, in the monastery of stillness.
Its tune is you, and my sorrow its rhythm,
لَحنُهاits melody أَنتِyou وَحُزنيand my sorrow وَقعُهاits rhythm
وَنَذيرُand the herald المَوتِdeath بَعضُone of السامِعينthe listeners
You are its melody, and my sorrow its rhythm,
And the harbinger of death some of its listeners.
And death's herald is one of the listeners.
Do not blame that it bears such sorrow—
لاdo not تَلوميblame ماwhat بِهاin it منof حَزَنٍsorrow
إِنَّماonly الأَحزانُsorrows موسيقىmusic الحَزينthe sorrowful one
Do not fault the sorrow within it;
For sorrows are the music of the sorrowful.
Sorrows are but the music of the sorrowful.
The most melodious tunes are those
أَعذَبُthe sweetest الأَلحانِthe melodies لَحنٌa melody أَفرَغَتpoured out
فيهِinto it أَناتُsighs الأَسىgrief طَيَّinner folds الحَنينlonging
The sweetest melody is a tune filled
In which the sighs of agony poured out yearning.
By grief's sighs with the inward folds of longing.
Embrace me in the gloom, draw near,
عانِقينيembrace me فيin الدُجىthe darkness إِقتَرِبيcome near
إِنَّنيindeed I أَفزَعُI fear مِمّاby what تَفزَعينyou fear
Embrace me in the darkness; come near.
For I am terrified by what terrifies you.
Indeed, I fear what you fear.
Bring your cheek close, press me

Bring your cheek close; draw me to
To your loving, warm bosom, and kiss this brow!
Your tender breast; kiss this brow.
We are but riders who lost their way
إِنَّماonly نَحنُwe كَركَبٍlike a caravan ضَلَّlost its way فيin
تيهِtrackless waste صَحراءَa desert بِقَومٍwith people تائِهينbewildered
We are but like a caravan that lost its way in
In the wasteland, among a people wandering astray.
A desert's trackless waste, with bewildered people.
We forgot all that was ours
قَدindeed نَسيناwe forgot كُلَّall ماthat كانَwas لَناours
وَتَرَكناand we left فيin غَدٍtomorrow ماwhat سَيَكونwill be
We have forgotten all that was ours,
And left in tomorrow what will be.
And left to tomorrow what will be.
