Your nights are lovelier than the night of paradise,

And your light is more splendid to the eyes, and more radiant.

As though you were God's eye, watching over its servants,

And seeing what hearts contain, you quiver.

As though you were a gushing spring whose waters overflow,

With quicksilver or silver rippling within it.

As though the darkness were a sea lowering its wing,

As though you were a pearl glowing within it.

As though you were a rose in the garden of the heavens,

As though its radiance were your wafting fragrance.

As though you were a tear on the cheek of the heavens,

Shed from weeping women's eyes, rolling down.

As though you were a proud peacock, as though

The stars of night were doves around you, singing.

As though you were a flute piping from the Throne,

As though its echo were your light shining forth.

You have lived long, wakeful in the deep darkness,

Like a sword enfolded in the shrouds of darkness.

You roam the reaches of the heavens, dazed,

With a face whose hue seems that of black leather.

So, full moon, be patient—the nights are short,

And misfortunes will subside, and you will find relief.
