عِندَماwhen يَضفوspreads عَلىover الرَملِthe sand الغَديرِthe pool
فَيَجِفُّthen dries up الماءُthe water وَالمَوجُand the waves النَثيرscattered
When the pool spreads over the sand,
Then the water and the scattered waves dry up,
وَيُنَضّىand is stripped away فَوقَupon شَطَّيهِits two banks الغَميرthe green growth
لِذُبولٍbecause of withering أَورَثَbequeathed الحُسنَbeauty ضَنىwasting sickness
And the greenery upon its two banks is stripped away,
From a withering that has left beauty ailing;
عِندَماwhen يَسكُنُfalls still شَدوَthe song of العَندَليبthe nightingale
فَوقَupon غُصنٍa bough لِلخَميلاتِof the thickets رَطيبfresh
When the nightingale's song falls still
Upon a fresh bough of the thickets,
وَيَلِفُّand wraps الكَونَthe universe فيin صَمتٍsilence كَئيبmournful
لِذُبولٍbecause of withering أَورَثَbequeathed الحُسنَbeauty ضَنىwasting sickness
And wraps the universe in mournful silence,
From a withering that has left beauty ailing;
عِندَماwhen تَعدوrace الرِياحُthe winds العاصِفاتstormy
داوِياتٍroaring فيthrough ثَناياthe recesses of العَذباتthe boughs
When the stormy winds race,
Roaring through the recesses of the boughs,
هاوِياتٍplunging فَوقَupon صَخرِthe rock of الأَبداتthe ages
لِذُبولٍbecause of withering أَورَثَbequeathed الحُسنَbeauty ضَنىwasting sickness
Plunging upon the rock of ages,
From a withering that has left beauty ailing;
عِندَماwhen تَأفُلُset فيin المَوتِdeath النُجومthe stars
كاسِفاتٍeclipsing نورَهاtheir light الزاهيradiant الوَسيمlovely
When the stars set in death,
Eclipsing their radiant, lovely light,
وَيُغِشّيand shrouds أَفقَهاtheir horizon لَيلٌa night بَهيمpitch-black
لِذُبولٍbecause of withering أَورَثَbequeathed الحُسنَbeauty ضَنىwasting sickness
And a pitch-black night shrouds their horizon,
From a withering that has left beauty ailing;
وَيوليand departs أَثرَهُin its wake مَنwhoever يَعشَقُloves
When burning longing perishes,
And whoever loves departs in its wake,
أَتَرىdo you think يَبقىendures الهَوىlove لاnot يَخلَقُwears out
لِذُبولٍbecause of withering أَورَثَbequeathed الحُسنَbeauty ضَنىwasting sickness
Do you think love endures, unworn
By a withering that has left beauty ailing?
عِندَماwhen تَذكُرُremembers طَيَّwithin القَبرِthe grave روحيmy soul
حَسنُكَyour beauty الضاحيradiant فَتَهفوthen it flutters مِنfrom ضَريحيmy tomb
When, within the grave, my soul remembers
Your radiant beauty, then flutters from my tomb
لِتَراكَto see you فَتَرىthen it sees أَيَّwhat قَبيحٍan ugly thing
لِذُبولٍbecause of withering أَورَثَbequeathed الحُسنَbeauty ضَنىwasting sickness
To see you—and beholds such ugliness
From a withering that has left beauty ailing;
سَتُواتيكَwill come to you كَأَلحانٍlike melodies شَذِيَّهfragrant

It will come to you like fragrant melodies,
Enfolded by the gloom of eternity's night,
وَهوَand it جَبّارٌa tyrant يَسوقُdrives البَشَرِيَّهhumankind
لِذُبولٍto withering أَورَثَbequeathed الحُسنَbeauty ضَنىwasting sickness
And it, a tyrant, drives humankind
To a withering that has left beauty ailing.
سَتُغنيكَwill sing to you بِلَحنٍwith a melody

It will sing you a melody
Overflowing with every art,

O my angel.

ياO ملاكيmy angel
By its love,
O my angel.
فَاِسمَعيهاso hear it فيin المِياهِthe waters الهامِسَهwhispering
بَينَamong أَشجارِthe trees of المُروجِthe meadows الناعِسَهdrowsy
So hear it in the whispering waters,
Among the trees of the drowsy meadows,
ياO ملاكيmy angel
سَوفَwill تَشكوcomplain لَكِto you مِنكِabout you
O my angel.
It will complain to you about you,
مِنof تَجَنّيكَyour cruelty وَتَركيand forsaking me
ياO ملاكيmy angel
Of your cruelty and your forsaking me,
O my angel.
فَاِسمَعيهاso hear it فيin الأَغانيthe songs الخافِتَهhushed
وَالأَغاريدِand the warblings الحَزانىsorrowful الصامِتَهsilent
So hear it in the hushed songs,
And the sorrowful, silent warblings,
ياO ملاكيmy angel
O my angel.
