    When annihilation numbed my lament,

And gave me its cups of forgetfulness to drink,

Poetry sent forth from itself a breeze,

Fragrant with perfume, sweet in its melodies.

It shook the sail of youth and awakened my thought,

So the ship of memories glided with me,

On the ocean of thoughts, bearing me as it folds time away,

And yearning toward the shores of life.

Whenever it tried to return to them,

The billows drove it away from them and back toward them.

The wind danced in its sail until

It shattered it and shattered both its rudders.

    وَدَعيها وَمَن يَنوحُ عَلَيها

    Mercy, O winds, and gentleness from you;

And leave it be, and the one who mourns over it.

For he has hopes in life like lightning,

That travel with him by night in the gloom of its two shores.

You gaze at the two shores through tears,

Sorrowful; scarcely anything can be seen

Except a light that gleams like a flash; cleft

Above it are the clouds, and it lies hidden within them.

And a radiance glows upon it, like the hue of a phantom,

    Dim against the darkness, weakened.

It is the love of those who have remembered him,

And whom longing has saddened after parting.

And life's clamor comes to him as a whisper,

Just as the unborn child hears the rumbling.

The tumult of storms moves through him,

Resembling a breeze in death's slumber.

And the din of days rings like a bell,

    Faintly, stealing toward him, indistinct.

Forever, in death, there still whispers

Their echo, unceasing in his ear.

And among the echoes is a tender voice,

Wandering amid the uproar of storms,

    Leaping past the raging hurricanes,

Unheeding the terror of this annihilation.

And he has a paradise that death re-echoes,

Like a whispered confidence from the world of the living.

The ear is strained toward it, then relaxed,

In a daze that answers with lowered eyes.

    It is love, still enduring

Every terror and mounting every hardship.

Rock and the dark passage loom within it,

And it traverses a fertile plain toward barrenness.

All is alike to it, whether stubborn

Or docile, along the course of the road.

It does not fear contention at any time,

Nor dread death along any passage.

Alas, O love, where will you go when

Death has woven nets around you,

And you have sent out honeyed, bewildered breaths

To it, confiding your complaint to it?

Do you think, O passion, you will storm death

And, like the soul, meet your doom at its hands?

Or will you endure until it sees you a hunter

In the groves of Paradise, shooting there?

The soul inclines toward evils and desires

Elements of them within the spirit.

Evil is only a refuge for its sorrow,

If it lacked the holiness of praise.

And from it, the soul has a place to swim and a place to fly,

At peace upon the tablet's expanse.

And it is, like love, abundance and growth,

And it is a pasture for the spirit, with abundant grazing.

O love, you are death to death,

Triumphant over decay, yet held in scorn.

You are the twin of life, the inheritor of death,

And a light that flutters over God.

You will remain after annihilation, afloat,

In a translucent expanse of ether,

Gazing at the universe in the slumber of deaths,

Like a vision that plunges with it and skims in flight.
