إِذاif اِسطَعتَyou can أَلاnot to تَفقِدَlose العَقلَreason وَالحِجاand sound judgment
وَظَلتَand you remain عَلىin رُغمِspite of الحَوادِثِcalamities حازِماresolute
If you can avoid losing reason and sound judgment,
If you can keep your head when all about you
And remain resolute despite calamities,
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
وَقَدand indeed ضَلَّwent astray كُلُّall الناسِthe people حَولَكَaround you وَاِنتَفواand picked out
عَلىfor كُلِّall ماthat which قَدalready كانَwas مِنكَfrom you لَوائِماreproaches
Though everyone around you has gone astray and picked out
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
Reproaches for everything you have done;
But make allowance for their doubting too;
إِذاif أَنتَyou قَدindeed صَدَقَتwere true to نَفسَكَyourself بَينَماwhile
ظُنونُsuspicions الوَرىhumankind تَرتابُdoubt فيin ذلِكَthat الصِدقِtruthfulness
If you have indeed been true to yourself, while
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
People's suspicions cast doubt on that truthfulness,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
وَبِالرَغمِand in spite مِنof هَذيthese الشُكوكِdoubts عَذَرتُهُمI excused them
وَقابَلتَand you met هذاthis الشَكَّdoubt بِاللَينِwith gentleness وَالرِفقِand kindness
And despite these doubts, I excused them,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And you met this doubt with gentleness and kindness;
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;
إِذاif اِسطَعتَyou can أَنto تَلقىface اِنتِظارَكَyour waiting دائِماًalways
صَبوراًpatient وَلَمand not تَملُلyou grow weary of عَذابَthe torment of التَرَقُّبِsuspense
If you can always face your waiting,
If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
Patiently, never tiring of the torment of suspense;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
إِذاif اِسطَعتَyou can أَنto تَبقىremain صَدوقاًtruthful مُكرَماًhonored
إِذاif كَذَّبَتكَcall you a liar الناسُpeople لَمnot تَتَكَذَّبِyou lie
If you can remain truthful and honored,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
If people call you a liar, yet you do not lie;
And treat those two impostors just the same;
إِذاif بَغَضَتكَhate you الناسُpeople وَاِزدادَand grows ضِغنُهُمtheir rancor
عَلَيكَagainst you فَلَمso not تَحقِدyou bear a grudge وَأَنتَand you are رَحيمُmerciful
If people hate you and their rancor grows
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Against you, yet you bear no grudge and are merciful;
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
وَبِالرَغمِand nevertheless لَمnot تَظهَرyou appear وَقوراًdignified وَطيباًand good
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you فيin كُلِّall الأُمورِmatters عَليمُknowledgeable
And yet you do not make a show of dignity and goodness,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
For you are knowledgeable in all matters;
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools;
بُنَيَّmy dear son إِذاif ماindeed اِسطَعتَyou can أَنto تَتَخَيَّلاimagine
وَلَمand not تَكُyou are عَبداًa slave يُكبِرُexalts الوَهمَillusion وَالحِلماand dreams
My dear son, if you can imagine,
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And are not a slave who exalts illusion and dreams;
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
بُنَيَّmy dear son إِذاif ماindeed اِسطَعتَyou can أَنto تَتَفَكَّراthink
وَلَمand not تَجعَلyou make الأَفكارَthoughts مَقصِدُكَyour aim الأَسمىthe highest
My dear son, if you can think,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And do not make thoughts your highest aim;
And never breathe a word about your loss;
إِذاif أَنتَyou لاقَيتَmet اِنتِصارَكَyour victory هادِئاًcalm
وَلَمand not تَتَذَمَّرyou complain فيin هَزيمَتِكَyour defeat الكُبرىthe greatest
If you meet your victory calmly,
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
And do not complain in your greatest defeat,
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
وَصاحَبتَand you accompanied ذَينَthose two العاهِلَينِmonarchs كَماas هُماthey both are
سَواسِيَةٌequals لَمnot تَفتَقِدyou lack مَعَهُماwith them both أَمراanything
And accompany those two monarchs as they are,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Equals, finding nothing lacking in their company;
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”
إِذاif اِسطَعتَyou can أَنto تُصغيlisten attentively إِلىto الحَقِّthe truth قُلتَهُyou spoke it
لِيُصبِحَso it may become فيin هذاthis الوُجودِworld ضِياءَa light
If you can listen to the truth you spoke,
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
So that it may become a light in this world,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
يَحورُهُtwists it الغَوغاءَthe rabble إِفكاًfalsehood وَضُلَّةًand misguidance

لِيَغدوso it may become شِباكاًnets توقِعُensnare البُسطاءَthe simple-hearted
Twisted by the rabble into falsehood and misguidance,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
To become nets that ensnare the simple-hearted;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
إِذاif اِسطَعتَyou can أَنto تَلقىface الَّذيthat which قَدalready بَنَيتَهُyou built it
وَأَنفَقتَand you spent فيهِon it العُمرَyour lifetime وَهوَand it is مُهدَمُdemolished
If you can face what you have built,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
And spent your life upon, now demolished,
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
وَعُدتَand you returned إِلَيهِto it مِنfrom جَديدٍnew تُقيمُهُyou raise it up
بِمُعوَلِكَwith your pickaxe الباليworn-out وَلاand not تَتَبَرَّمُyou grumble
And return to it afresh to raise it up,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
With your worn-out pickaxe, and do not grumble;
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!
بُنَيَّmy dear son إِذاif جَمَّعتَyou gathered مالَكَyour wealth كُلَّهُall of it
وَكَوَّمتَand you heaped up ماwhat حَصَلتَهُyou obtained it مِنof مَكاسِبِgains
My dear son, if you gather all your wealth,
And heap up what gains you have obtained,
وَغامَرتَand you ventured فيinto أَمرٍan undertaking مَرومٍsought-for مُخاطِراًtaking a risk
بِمالِكَwith your wealth هذاthis كُلَّهُall of it غَيرَnot حاسِبِcalculating
And venture into a sought-for undertaking, risking
All this wealth of yours, without calculation;
وَلكِنbut خَسِرتَyou lost القَدحَthe gaming arrow خُسرانَthe loss of جاهِدٍone who strives
فَعُدتَso you returned لِتَبَنّيto build بادِئاًstarting غَيرَnot يائِسِdespairing
But lose at the draw of the gaming arrow, as a striver loses,
And start building again, without despair;
وَلَمand not تَكُyou are بَكّاءًa frequent weeper عَلىover ماwhat فَقَدتَهُyou lost it
وَلَمand not تَكُyou are شَكّاءًa frequent complainer وَلَمand not تَتَنَفَّسِyou sigh
And do not keep weeping over what you have lost,
And do not keep complaining, nor sigh;
إِذاif أَنتَyou أَجهَدتَstrained الفُؤادَthe heart مَعَwith العِداthe foes
لِتَمضيto press on فيin مَسعاكَyour endeavor وَالغُنمُand gain سانِحُwithin reach
If you have strained your heart against your foes,
To press on in your endeavor while gain lies within reach,
وَقَدand already خارَتِfailed الأَعصابُthe nerves مِنكَwithin you وَلَمand not تَعُدremains

Though your nerves have failed you, and there is no longer
Any reserve within them that your ribs enfold,
مَضيتَyou pressed on بِقَلبٍwith a heart واهِنِweak الخَفقِheartbeat خائِرexhausted
تَكُرَّyou charge again وَجِسمٌand a body كادَalmost يُصبِحُbecomes هالِكاperishing
You press on with a heart faint of beat and exhausted,
You charge again, your body almost perishing,
وَلَمand not تَبقَremains مِنof هذيthese القُوىpowers غَيرَexcept عَزمَةٍa resolve

And nothing remains of these powers but a resolve
That cries, 'Take heed! Go on, striving in your struggle!'
إِذاif أَنتَyou خالَطتَmingled with الجَماهيرَthe crowds صائِناًpreserving
فَضائِلَكَyour virtues العُلياlofty فَلَمso not تَتَلَوَّثِyou become tainted
If you mingle with the crowds, preserving
Your lofty virtues, and do not become tainted;
إِذاif أَنتَyou سايَرتَkept company with المُلوكَkings مُحافِظاًpreserving
لِطابِعِكَof your character الشَعبِيِof the common people كَالمُتَشَبِّثِlike one holding fast
If you keep company with kings, preserving
Your commoner's character, like one who holds fast;
إِذاif اِسطَعتَyou can أَنto تُقصيkeep away عَدُوُّكَyour enemy عَنfrom أَذىharm
وَتَأمَنَand you feel safe حَتّىeven صاحِباًa friend لَكَto you وافِياfaithful
If you can keep your enemy from causing harm,
And be safe even from a friend faithful to you;
إِذاif أَنتَyou قَدَّرتَvalued الرِجالَmen جَميعَهُمall of them
وَلَمand not تَكُyou are فيin هذاthis الحِسابِassessment مُغالِياًexcessive
If you value all men,
And are not excessive in that estimation;
بُنَيَّmy dear son إِذاif حاسَبتَyou accounted for كُلَّevery دَقيقَةٍminute
مِنَof الوَقتِtime تَمضيpasses لَيسَnot تَرحَمُshows mercy عاتيهruthless
My dear son, if you take account of every minute
Of time, which passes ruthlessly, showing no mercy,
مَلَأتَyou filled بِهاin it كُلَّall الثَوانيthe seconds وَلَمand not تَكُنyou would be

You fill every second within it, and would not
Let it pass in vain, second by second;
سَتَحكُمُyou will rule فيin الدُنياthe world بُنَيَّmy dear son جَميعُهاall of it
وَتُصبِحُand you become لِلدُنياof the world العَريضَةِwide مالِكاan owner
You will rule the whole world, my dear son,
And become the owner of the wide world;
وَأَعظَمُand greater مِنthan هذَينِthese two شَأناًin worth سَتَغتَديyou will become
بِهاthrough it رَجُلاًa man فَوقَabove الرِجالِmen لِذالِكاbecause of that
And—greater than these two in worth—you will become
Thereby a man above other men, for that reason.
