Ah, what a flute!
Oh, what a sigh it is
Its melodies are a whistling wind,
Its melodies fluttering

In the silence of the valley of oblivion,
In the silence of the valley of oblivion
Embracing the veils of darkness.
Embracing the balconies

It roars in the waves
With a clamorous voice,
Of the tumultuous sound

Shining over the night journey,
It blooms in the darkness
From the twilight of death.
Of the dusk of death

And its silence severed
Plundered by grief.
Grief ransacks it

It echoed in the echoes

Lingering in the darkness

Keeping Al-Jawza company at night,
Conversing with the nightingale
And breathing out the dream.
And kindling dreams

Assaulting the spirits
Without asking leave.
Without asking permission
فَالكَونُso the universe فيin رَجفِa tremor
كَالكَوكَبِlike the star الخَفّاقquivering

So the universe trembles,
So the universe quivers
Like the quivering star;
Like a flickering planet
خاضاthey both plunged مِنَout of الخَوفِfear
فيinto مَسبَحِthe swimming pool of الآفاقthe horizons
Both plunged in fear
Plunged in fear
Into the pool of the horizons.
In the horizon's rosary
وَتارَةًand at times يَخفَتgrows faint

فيin غَسقِthe darkness of اللَيلِnight
And at times it grows faint
And at times it quiets down
In the darkness of night,
In the gloom of night
كَالروحِlike the soul لَوif تَصمُتit falls silent
فيamid صَخبِthe clamor of الوَيلِwoe
Like the soul, were it to fall silent
Like a soul if it falls silent
Amid the clamor of woe.
In the clamor of wailing

Then you imagine the waves
You'd think the wave
Toying with the earth,
Playing with the ground
يَرُجُّهاshakes it رَجّاa violent shaking
وَبَعدَهاand afterward يَمضيmoves on
Shaking it violently,
Shaking it, then moving on
And afterward moving on;
It rises above the star

And touching the ceiling,
As if in a dream
كَأَنَّas though فيin حُلمِa dream

As though, in a dream,
A specter with it floated
A phantom had fluttered within it.
So memories roamed

Then memory wandered
In its distant heart
Through its far-off heart,
Like a shadow if it walked

بِصَفحَةِacross the surface of الماءِthe water
Like a shadow, were it to travel by night
On the page of water
Across the water's surface,
In the stillness of eternities
فيin دُجنَةِthe gloom of الآبادendless ages

Trembling like ghosts,

Like embers beneath the ashes,
Above it, fragrance diffused
From above it, incense spread its scent.

On a dark horizon.

Brighter than radiance.
