Have you not seen the full moon, yellowed with illness,

As though it were a likeness of me, O my world?

Glances from you ensnared it in its heaven,

So it spent the night enduring anguish born of them.

    وَفي السَماءِ مَلاكُ اللَيلِ يَبكيها

    On earth, people's hearts complain of them;

And in the sky, the angel of night weeps for them.

Or do you see its light spilling like tears,

Raining upon the flowers' cheek, watering them?

It pours out its sorrows to the star, submissively,

And the stars have hearts you do not console.

So, alas for the sorrowing one who has gone to complain

To another sorrowing one, whose cares he does not know.

These souls, when their hour of death arrives—

Then in your eyes is magic that will revive them.
