O you who roam the countryside, far from home,

If you come to Munster, or come to Wenta,

Then ask the countryside's herdsmen there about cattle

That might come close to them—ask them as you please.

Never will you find anyone in the world

Who can show you a single cow to match their beauty.

O, how lovely they are as they graze in their thickets,

The cows of Kerry, frolicking in their pastures!

And if they sway proudly toward the markets,

Their beauty on display, other cattle blush before them.

The poets of the community all sing to them

A hymn to beauty, and the farmer takes pride.

There the graceful maidens long to stroke

The silk of their coats with a healer's tenderness.

Everyone praises them—no, rather, caresses them,

And everyone calls them the people's darling.

And among cattle there is a white one, different in nature,

    Or a red one, skittish in temper and given to lowing;

But the cows of Kerry, in their docility—

No cattle can match them in gentleness.

Their milk is fit to nourish you as food

Whose sweet savor delights illustrious sultans.

They are worthy to nourish every mail-clad warrior,

Dauntless in combat, entering the battlefields.

Tell the one who writes history diligently:

The cows of Kerry are great in merit and renown.

Give their name, without toil, a place in immortality,

Beside the wall of Troy or the hound of Ossian.

And you, O artist who paints them,

In the shade of a thick-leaved thornbush in the meadow,

Paint these cows for us as they graze

On green grasses in sheltered shade.
