الحَمدُpraise لِلَّهِto God لَيسَthere is not ليfor me فَرَسُa horse
وَلاnor عَلىat بابِthe door of مَنزِليmy home حَرَسُguards
Praise be to God: I have no horse,
Nor guards at the door of my home,
وَلاnor غُلامٌa servant-boy إِذاwhen هَتَفتُI called out بِهِto him
بادَرَhe hurried نَحويtoward me كَأَنَّهُas though he were قَبَسُa firebrand
Nor a servant-boy who, when I call to him,
Hurries toward me like a firebrand.
إِبنيmy son غُلاميmy servant وَزَوجَتيand my wife أَمَتيmy bondwoman
مَلَّكنيهاmade her mine المُلّاكُthe marriage contract وَالعُرُسُand the wedding
My son is my servant, and my wife my bondwoman;
The marriage contract and wedding made her mine.
غَنيتُI became self-sufficient بِاليَأسِthrough despair وَاِعتَصَمتُand I sought refuge بِهِin it
عَنfrom كُلِّevery فَردٍindividual بِوَجهِهِupon his face عَبَسُa scowl
I have found sufficiency in despair and sought refuge in it
From every man whose face wears a scowl.
فَماso … not يَرانيhe sees me بِبابِهِat his door أَبَداًever
طَلقَcheerful المُحَيّاof countenance سَمحٌgenerous وَلاnor شَرِسُsurly
So no man ever sees me at his door,
Whether smiling and generous or surly.
