أَناI الَّذيthe one who لَوif مُزِجَwere mixed البَحرُthe sea بيwith me
تَكَدَّرتُwould grow murky بيbecause of me لُجَّةُthe depths البَحرِof the sea
I am the one—if the sea were mixed with me,
the sea’s depths would grow murky because of me.
أَناI الَّذيthe one who لَوif عَثَرَstumbled النيلِthe Nile بيover me
أَصبَحَwould become ماءَthe water النيلِof the Nile لاnot يَجريflow
I am the one—if the Nile stumbled over me,
the Nile’s water would cease to flow.
أَناI الَّذيthe one who لَوif وَسَّدونيthey laid me down الثَرىthe earth
ضَجَّتcried out قُبورُthe graves الناسِof people مِنbecause of قَبريmy grave
I am the one—if they made the earth my pillow,
people’s graves would cry out because of my grave.
وَلَوand if قَضىspent time الشَيطانُSatan فيin اللَيلِthe night بيwith me
تَعَوَّذَwould seek refuge الشَيطانُSatan مِنfrom شَرّيmy evil
And if Satan spent the night with me,
Satan would seek refuge from my evil.
وَالسَبعُand the wild beast لَوif لاطَمتُهُI traded blows with it حاسِراًunarmed
فَلَّwould blunt شَباthe sharp tip مِخلَبِهِof its claw ضُفريmy fingernail
And the wild beast—if I traded blows with it unarmed,
my fingernail would blunt its claw’s sharp tip.
وَلَوand if تَلَقَّيتُI faced صُدورَthe points القَناof the spears
كَسَّرتُهاI would shatter them بِالطَعنِby the thrusting فيinto صَدريmy chest
And if I faced the points of spears,
I would shatter them as they thrust into my chest.
وَالسَيفُand the sword لَوif أَجرَيتُI caused to circulate ذِكريmention of me لَهُto it
وَلّىwould flee وَقَدand already قَطَّعَهُhad cut it to pieces ذِكريmention of me
And the sword—if I had myself mentioned to it,
would flee, already cut to pieces by the mention of me.
أَناI الَّذيthe one who يَخزىis disgraced وَلكِنَّهُbut he
بِذَقنِwith the chin of أَمثالِكَthose like you يَستَبريcleanses himself
I am the one who is disgraced, yet
wipes himself clean on the chins of men like you.
