    Bewildered, I say to Yahya on the night in prison,

    And my sleep there is the sleep of a shackled captive:

    أعنك على تحبير شعر مقصد

    Help me watch the stars and gaze upon them;

    I will help you craft well-wrought verse.

    For in our two conditions lie a lesson and food for thought.

    And the strangest thing is imprisoning a blind man and a crippled man.

    Each of us, when his walking stick leaves his palm,

    Sinks down sprawling, or prostrates himself face down.

    For his walking stick guides a man born blind to the paths,

    And another, together with the hand, stands in place of a leg.
