هلwhether أُبْصِرَنّI shall surely see بنيthe sons of العَوّامal-ʿAwwām قدalready شُملواthey were engulfed
هل أُبْصِرَنّ بني العَوّام قد شُملوا
Oh, if only I knew—and wishing has sometimes availed—
Oh how I wish my poetry might avail
whether I shall indeed see the sons of al-ʿAwwām engulfed
Might the commoners see, now fettered they trail
بالذُلِّin humiliation والأسْرِand captivity والتشريدand banishment إنهمُindeed, they
بالذُلِّ والأسْرِ والتشريد إنهمُ
علىupon البريّةhumankind حَتْفٌdeath أينماwherever نزلواthey settle
على البريّة حَتْفٌ أينما نزلوا
in humiliation, captivity, and banishment. Indeed, they are
Subjugated, imprisoned, dispersed hither they roam
death to humankind wherever they settle.
Prey in the wilds, wherever they come
أمor هلwhether أراكI see you بأكنافِin the regions of العِراقIraq وقدwhile already
أم هل أراك بأكنافِ العِراق وقد

ذَلّت لعزِكِ أقوامٌ وقد نكِلوا
Or shall I see you in the regions of Iraq, when
Or might I see you in Iraq once more
peoples have yielded to your might and been cowed?
Your glory humbles them, fallen, forsworn
