    Shall I scatter pearls among grazing livestock,

    And so find myself stored away with a shepherdess of sheep?

    For they have become ignorant of its worth,

    So I will not come to hang it around the necks of lambs and kids.

    Then if God, the Gentle, favors me with His kindness,

    And I encounter people worthy of learning and wisdom,

    وَإِلاَّ فَمَخزُونٌ لَدَيَّ وَمُكتَتَم

    I will spread it, benefiting others, and kindle affection;

    Otherwise, it remains stored away with me and concealed.

    For whoever grants knowledge to the ignorant squanders it,

    And whoever withholds it from those entitled to it has indeed done wrong.
