هَبنيgrant that I صَبَوتُI became enamored كَمَاjust as تَرونَyou see بِزَعمِكُمaccording to your claim
هَبني صَبَوتُ كَمَا تَرونَ بِزَعمِكُم
وَحَظِيتُand I was fortunate مِنهُfrom him بِلَثمِwith kissing خَدِّa cheek أزهَرِradiant
وَحَظِيتُ مِنهُ بِلَثمِ خَدِّ أزهَرِ
Grant that I fell in love, as you claim,
Grant that I fell in love, as you see it, according to your claim,
And had the joy of kissing his radiant cheek.
And had the good fortune to kiss his radiant cheek.
إنّيindeed I اعتَزَلتُI withdrew فَلاَso do not تَلُومواyou blame إِنَّهُindeed he
إنّي اعتَزَلتُ فَلاَ تَلُوموا إِنَّهُ
أضحَىhas become يُقَابِلُنيhe faces me بِوَجهٍwith a face أشعَرِيAshʿarī (punning on 'hairy')
أضحَى يُقَابِلُني بِوَجهٍ أشعَرِي
Indeed, I withdrew—so do not blame me; for he
I have withdrawn, so do not blame me, for he
Now meets me with a bearded face.
Now faces me with an Ashʿarī—hairy—face.
