غَرقَى فَلاَ دَاعٍ لِنَهجٍ أَقوَمِ
Ailing, estranged from good deeds, in the sea of perdition—
Ailing when it comes to good deeds, in the sea of ruin,
drowned, with no one to summon them to a straighter path.
Drowned, with none to call them to a more upright path.

صَرَفَت وُجُوههم لِوَجهِ الدِّرهَمش
They were consumed with passion for every rotten vice;
They were enamored of every blameworthy vice,
such passion turned their faces toward the face of the dirham.
Which turned their faces toward the face of the dirham.

They slept, heedless of the true Goal, and did not awaken;
They slept, heedless of the goal, and did not awaken;
their awakening will be to a far graver calamity.
Their awakening will be to a greater calamity.
