سَمَّوْهُthey named him عَمْراًʿAmr فَصَحَّفْنَاbut we misread اسْمَهُhis name غَمَراًGhamr (a simpleton)
سَمَّوْهُ عَمْراً فَصَحَّفْنَا اسْمَهُ غَمَراً
فَبَيِّنَthen revealed الدَّهْرُtime مِنَّاon our part مَوْضِعَthe place of الغلطِthe error
فَبَيِّنَ الدَّهْرُ مِنَّا مَوْضِعَ الغلطِ
They named him ʿAmr, but we misread his name as Ghamr.
They called it life, but we misread its name as ordeal
Then time revealed where our error lay.
And time made clear where in this word we erred
فأَصْبَحَتْso became عَيْنُهُhis ʿayn (the letter ع) غَيْناًa ghayn (the letter غ) بِنُقْطَتِهاwith its dot
فأَصْبَحَتْ عَيْنُهُ غَيْناً بِنُقْطَتِها
وطالَماand often ارْتَفَعَwas cleared up التَّصْحِيفُthe misreading بالنُّقَطِby the dots
وطالَما ارْتَفَعَ التَّصْحِيفُ بالنُّقَطِ
So his ʿayn became a ghayn with its dot.
Thus in his eye there dwelt a teardrop constantly
And often have misreadings been cleared up by dots.
And oft in points the act of misreading stirred
