The pale camels journeyed, repeating their yearning cries,
The camels marched, yearning and longing returned
And, in longing, tugged against their nose-rings.
And passion seized us from afar

Their footpads bloodied by my claim upon them,
Swift she-camels whose gait cut through
They crossed the deserts, level plains and rugged ground.
The wilderness, sad and grieving

Deprived of their lush greenery and flowing water
Their green grass and running water.
Along the length of their route

Whenever passion intensified, heading
A destination they knew only by conjecture,
To limits known only vaguely

I said to the guide, protect their yearning
Through night travel; indeed, some longing is madness.”
With the Pleiades, for passion is madness

Oh what a day when I weep blood
Indeed, the camels and I have our own cares that day.
For the she-camel has affairs there to tend

When they marched, they captivated all hearts
Bearing beauty as full moons and boughs.
Bearing beauty, with ringlet and branch

Any dark beauty I described
Put tawny spear-shafts to shame in color and suppleness.
Pales next to their graceful hue and softness

If only she would infect the eyelids with drowsiness.
Would that she were a doe leaping playfully

The day I sold her my soul at such loss

No aid against passion, or patience within

The hands of fate effaced its verses
So they showed my eye its ṣād as shīn.
My eyes saw only the sad transformed to nothing

قَصَّit related ماwhat يَأتيwill befall عليهمْupon them مِثْلَماjust as
قَصَّit related أَخْبارَaccounts القُرونِof generations الأَوَّلِيناthe earliest
It told what would befall them, just as
He told of bygone generations and their tales
It told the histories of the earliest generations.
Consider their accounts, realized as
وأَتَتْand came أَخْبارُهُits accounts فيin حِكَمٍwise teachings
فَتَأملْهاso contemplate them ثِماراًas fruits وَفُنُوناand branches
And its accounts came in wise teachings,
Fruits and arts, and lessons to learn
So contemplate them as fruits and branches.
He divided mercy among those who recited it
قَسَّمَapportioned الرَّحْمَةmercy فِيamong قُرَّائِهِits reciters
وَعَذابَand the torment الخِزْيِof shame فيamong المُسْتَقْسِمِيناthose who divine by lots
It apportioned mercy among its reciters,
And humiliating torment for those who apportioned others to Him
And the torment of shame among those who divine by lots.
None can match him, and in his similitudes
ماnot لَهُit has مثْلٌan equal وَفيand in أمْثالِهِits parables
أَبداًalways مَوْعَظَةٌan admonition لِلْمُتَّقِيناfor the God-fearing
It has no equal, and in its parables
Is eternal guidance for the reverent
There is always an admonition for the God-fearing.
God showed mercy through him, and how many
رَحِمَshowed mercy to اللهُGod بهِthrough it الخَلْقَcreation وَكَمْand how many
أَهْلَكَdestroyed اللهُGod بآياتٍthrough signs قُرُوناgenerations
Through it God showed mercy to creation; how many
Were destroyed by the verses of the Quran
Generations God destroyed through signs!
