Yet how could a child lack shrewdness,
when every newborn is born in the natural state?

فإنَّfor indeed زَوْجِيmy husband عندهhe has ضَجْرَهْirritability

She replied, 'That is not my way,
for my husband has an irritable temper.
أَخافُI fear إنْif كَلَّمْتُهُI speak to him كِلمَةًa word
طَلَّقَنِيhe will divorce me قالتْshe said لهاto her بَعْرَهْa dung pellet
I fear that if I speak a single word to him,
he will divorce me.' She said to her, 'A dung pellet!'
فَهَوَّنَتْso she diminished قَدْرِيmy worth فيin نَفْسِهاher own mind
فجاءَتِthen came الزَّوْجَةُthe wife مُحْتَرَّهْburning with anger
So she lowered my worth in her own eyes,
and my wife arrived in a fury.
فاسْتَقْبَلَتْنِيthen she faced me فَتَهَدَّدْتُهاso I threatened her
فاسْتَقْبَلَتْso she greeted رَأْسِيmy head بآجُرَّهْwith a brick
She faced me, and I threatened her;
so she greeted my head with a brick.
وَباتَتِand spent the night الفِتنَةُstrife ماin the space بَينَنَاbetween us

And strife spent the night between us,
from the start of night until morning.
وَماand not رَأَىfound العَبْدُthe servant لهُfor himself مَخْلَصاًa way of escape

And your servant found no escape
until not a drop remained in his eye.
فَحَقُّso it is the right مَنْof one حالَتُهُhis condition هذِهِthis

So one in such a plight deserves
a glance of regard from my lord.
