أمًّاas for المَحَبَّةُlove لِمَنْfor whomever فَهِيَthen it is بَذْلُsacrifice of نُفُوسِsouls
أمًّا المَحَبَّةُ لِمَنْ فَهِيَ بَذْلُ نُفُوسِ
فَتَنَعَّمِيso take delight يَاO مُهْجَتِيmy soul بالبُوسِin misery
فَتَنَعَّمِي يَا مُهْجَتِي بالبُوسِ
As for love, for whomever it is, it is the sacrifice of souls.
Motherly love is the offering of souls
So take delight, O my soul, in misery.
So revel, my beloved, in kisses
بَذَلَoffered المُحِبُّthe lover لِمَنْto the one whom أَحَبَّhe loved دُمُوعَهُhis tears

وَتَوَجُّهِيلِجنَابِهِand my turning toward his presence المَحْرُوسِguarded
وَتَوَجُّهِيلِجنَابِهِ المَحْرُوسِ
God accepted my seeking nearness through praise of him,
God accepted my approach through His praise
And my turning toward his guarded presence.
And my orientation towards His protected throne
رُمْتُI sought المَسِيرَthe journey إلَيْهِto him أَعْجَزَنِيdefeated me السُّرَىnight travel
رُمْتُ المَسِيرَ إلَيْهِ أَعْجَزَنِي السُّرَى
وَأبَاحَنِيand he granted me مَرْآهُsight of him غَيْرnot يَئُوسِdespairing
وَأبَاحَنِي مَرْآهُ غَيْر يَئُوسِ
I sought to journey to him; night travel proved beyond me,
