ماnot أكلناwe ate فيduring ذاthis الصِّيامِthe fast كُنافَهkunafa (sweet pastry)
ما أكلنا في ذا الصِّيامِ كُنافَه
آهِah! وابُعْدَهاalas for its remoteness! عليناfrom us مسافَهdistance
آهِ وابُعْدَها علينا مسافَه
We have eaten no kunafa during this fast.
We had no kunafa in this fast
Ah, alas, what a distance separates it from us!
Oh, how far it is from us!
قالَsaid قَوْمٌsome people إنَّindeed العِمَادَal-Imad كَرِيمٌgenerous
قالَ قَوْمٌ إنَّ العِمَادَ كَرِيمٌ
قُلْتُI said هذاthis عنديin my view حَدِيثُa tale خُرافَهa fable
قُلْتُ هذا عندي حَدِيثُ خُرافَه
Some people said, “Al-Imad is generous.”
Some said Al-Imam is generous
I said, “To me, that is a fairy tale.”
I said this is nonsense talk
أناI ضَيفٌa guest لَهُof his وَقدand already مُتُّI have died جوعاًof hunger
أنا ضَيفٌ لَهُ وَقد مُتُّ جوعاً
لَيتَif only شِعْرِيmy knowledge لِمْwhy لاnot تُعدُّis prepared الضِّيافَهhospitality
لَيتَ شِعْرِي لِمْ لا تُعدُّ الضِّيافَه
I am his guest, and I have already died of hunger.
I'm his guest, and I'm starving
Would that I knew why no hospitality is prepared!
I wish I knew why he won't host
وهوَand he إنْif يُطْعِمِhe serves الطَّعامَthe food فماthen not يُطْstart of 'he serves it'
وهوَ إنْ يُطْعِمِ الطَّعامَ فما يُطْ
عِمُهُend of 'he serves it' إِلَّاexcept بِسُمْعَةٍfor reputation أوor مَخافَهfear
عِمُهُ إِلَّا بِسُمْعَةٍ أو مَخافَه
And if he serves food, he does not serve
If he feeds people, he doesn't do it
it except for reputation or out of fear.
Except for fame or out of fear
وهَوَand he فيin الحَرِّthe heat والخَرِيفِand autumn وَفيand in البيstart of 'the house'
وهَوَ في الحَرِّ والخَرِيفِ وَفي البي
تِend of 'the house' يَجمَعُhe gathers الحُطامَworldly wealth كالجَرَّافهlike a sweeper
تِ يَجمَعُ الحُطامَ كالجَرَّافه
And in the heat and autumn, and in the
In summer, winter, home, he hoards debris
house, he gathers worldly wealth like a sweeper.
Like a scraper
فاعلَمُوهُso know it عَنيfrom me وَلاand do not تَعْتِبُونيreproach me
فاعلَمُوهُ عَني وَلا تَعْتِبُوني
إنَّindeed عِنْدِيI have فيduring الصَّوْمِfasting بعضَsome الحِرافَهْirritability
إنَّ عِنْدِي في الصَّوْمِ بعضَ الحِرافَهْ
So learn this from me, and do not reproach me:
Let him know from me, don't blame me
For I have a touch of irritability when fasting.
For I have some tricks up my sleeve
فَهْوَso he إنْif لَمْnot يُخرِجhe brings out قليلاًa little إلىto الحاstart of 'the wall'
فَهْوَ إنْ لَمْ يُخرِج قليلاً إلى الحا
ئِطِend of 'the wall' فيduring لَيلَتيmy night طَلَعْتُI shall go up القَرافَهْal-Qarafa
ئِطِ في لَيلَتي طَلَعْتُ القَرافَهْ
So if he does not bring out a little to the
