تعلقت بالاسباب دون مدبري
فَقطعهاso He cut them off بيfor me فاِنقلبتُand I turned back الىto حسريmy regret
فَقطعها بي فاِنقلبتُ الى حسري
I clung to worldly means, forsaking Him who governs my affairs;
I clung to means rather than to the One who governs my affairs.
so He severed them from me, and they became my regrets.
So He cut them off for me, and I fell back into my regret.
وَلَوand had أَنَّنيI اِستَغنيتfound sufficiency باللَهin God وحدهHim alone

عَن الخلق لَم أَحتج لزيد وَلا عمرو
Had I sought sufficiency in God alone,
And had I found sufficiency in God alone,
free of all creatures, I would have needed neither Zayd nor ʿAmr.
apart from creation, I would have needed neither Zayd nor ʿAmr.

And let the veil fall over me, O You who let the veil fall.

Do not try me before humankind with some grave ordeal
And do not try me among humankind with a calamity
that exceeds my strength and exhausts my patience.
that overtaxes my strength and exhausts my patience.

And if the enemies see how they might scheme against me,
And if the enemies see how to plot against me,
then seize them with the hand of restraint, from a direction I cannot discern.
then seize them with the hand of restraint, from where I know not.

Preserve the dignity of my face from the humiliation of begging;
And preserve my face's luster from humiliating begging,
through Your bounty, enfold me in ease amid hardship.
through Your bounty, and enfold me in ease amid hardship.

By the light of knowledge, make my heart and outward form jewel-like,
And make jewels of my heart and frame with the light of knowledge.
and remove the crushing burden of my sins, which has made my back groan.
And remove the burden of my sins, which have made my back creak.

وَحط أَنسهم بالخبر من شرر الشر
For my sake, mercifully honor those close to me,
And honor, for my sake, those close to me in kinship.
and hedge their fellowship with discernment against the evil of evil.
And guard their company with knowledge from the sparks of evil.

And be, my Master, my aid and my succor always—
And be, my Master, my help and my succor always,
my strength and my refuge always, and the wealth within my poverty.
and my strength and my refuge always, and my poverty's wealth.
