فَالبسْso clothe yourself فقدْfor indeed بَردَgrew cold الزمانُthe season بُروداcoldness
فَالبسْ فقدْ بَردَ الزمانُ بُرودا
Winter has donned skins of ice.
Winter donned coats of ice,
So clothe yourself, for the season has grown cold indeed.
So wear them, for time grew cold and bleak,

فَغَدا لسكّانِ الجَحيمِ حَسودا
How many a believer has been pinched by winter's claws,
How many believers, torn by winter's claws,
and become envious of the dwellers of Hell!
Turn envious of hell's inhabitants,

choosing the heat of fire and the roasting spit.
Choosing heat of fire and charcoal's glow,

O keeper of the two woods, neglect neither:
Oh two-lute player, neglect them not,
Play us a lute, and burn a stick of wood.
Strum us a lute and kindle a lute.
