We lived on until we saw a marvel in love—
We have lived to see wonders in love
through every month; yet the proverb says, “Live through Rajab.”
In every month—and the proverb says, "Live till Rajab."
أَليسَis it not منof عَجبٍwonder أنيthat I ضحىat midmorning ارتْحَلواthey departed

Is it not a wonder that, when they departed in the morning, I
Is it not a wonder that, at midmorning when they departed,
kindled, from the water of my tears, a flame within my breast?
I kindled a flame in my breast from the water of my tears,
وأنَّand that أجفانَeyelids عَينيmy eye أمطرَتْrained وَرِقاًsilver
وأنَّand that ساحةَthe expanse خَدِّيmy cheek أنبتَتْbrought forth ذَهَبَاgold
And that the lids of my eyes rained silver,
And that my eyelids rained silver,
while the expanse of my cheek sprouted gold?
And that the field of my cheek sprouted gold?

And I blazed with lightning from their quarters;
And if lightning flares from their direction,
longing flared in both my sides, and both caught fire.
Longing blazes in my breast and flares.

As though what was laid bare from its saffron-dyed robe were
As though its safflower-dyed garment, from which it burst,
Joseph’s shirt, covered with false blood.
Were Joseph's shirt, which they covered with false blood.
