جادَ الزَّمانُ وكانَ ذا بُخلٍ بها

جادَ الزَّمانُ وكانَ ذا بُخلٍ بها

وأَطاعَني فيها وقدماً ما عصى

Time grew generous, though it had been miserly with her,

Time passed by stingily withholding her from me

And yielded to me concerning her, after long defying me,

And I obeyed her during it, though my feet once disobeyed

حتّى تصالحنا ومازجَ ريقَها

حتّى تصالحنا ومازجَ ريقَها

رِيقي ونازعنْا هوىً مُستْخلَصا

رِيقي ونازعنْا هوىً مُستْخلَصا

Until we made peace, and her saliva mingled with

Until we were reconciled, and her saliva was mixed

Mine, and we shared an unalloyed love.

With my saliva, as we struggled with a most refined passion

واللثمُ أنشأ بالتقاءِ شفاهنا

واللثمُ أنشأ بالتقاءِ شفاهنا

صوتاً كما دَحرجتَ في الماءِ الحَصى

صوتاً كما دَحرجتَ في الماءِ الحَصى

And kissing, as our lips met, produced

And the kissing produced, from our lips meeting

A sound as when you rolled pebbles in water.

A sound, like pebbles you cascaded in water
