ياO صاحبيَّmy two companions سَلاask, you two فُؤاديmy heart هلwhether سَلاit has forgotten
عمّنfrom the one whom كلفْتُI became enamored بحبِّهwith love for him ليجيبَso that it may answer لاno
O my two companions, ask my heart whether it has forgotten
My friend, my heart asks: Have you asked
the one I was smitten with, so that it may answer, “No.”
The one whose love burdens me, only for him to say no?
ياO ربِّmy Lord إنif يكُhe is لاnot يجودُgives generously بسلوةٍwith solace
تَحياmay live بِهاthrough it نفسُthe soul المَشوقِthe yearning lover المُبتْلىthe afflicted one
O my Lord, if he grants no solace
O Lord, if he will not be kind
through which the afflicted lover’s soul may live,
To revive the longing soul of the afflicted one
فانفِthen banish الحَلاوةَthe sweetness عنfrom مجاجَةِspittle ريقِهhis saliva
واؤمُرْand command بنفسجَthe violet صُدغِهِof his temple أنْto يَذْبُلاwither
then banish sweetness from his spittle,
Then withhold the sweetness from his saliva
and command the violet of his temple to wither.
And command the violet on his cheek to wither
