ولستُ أستبدعُ ما نابَني

من خُرُقٍ في فعْلهِ شائعْ

Nor do I find what has befallen me strange:

I do not claim what has reached me

Clumsiness widespread in his conduct.

Of common flaws in His deeds

فالرفقُ والقارظُ غابا معاً

كِلاهُما لم يَكُ بالرّاجِعْ

كِلاهُما لم يَكُ بالرّاجِعْ

For gentleness and the acacia-leaf gatherer have vanished together;

For gentleness and severity both disappeared

Neither of them has returned.
