عليهِto him ولاnor التّليدِinherited wealth ولاnor الطرّيفِnewly acquired wealth
I say to him, not having begrudged my own life
to him, nor inherited wealth, nor newly acquired wealth:
فدىًa ransom لكَfor you ماwhat تُزَرُّare buttoned عليهِover it قًمْصيmy shirts
وقُمْصيand my shirts لاnot تُزرُّare buttoned علىover سَخيفِa worthless person
May what my shirts are buttoned over be a ransom for you;
and my shirts are not buttoned over a worthless man.
فإنيfor I منكَthrough you فيin روضٍa garden أَريضٍlush and spacious
دُللتُI was guided بهِthrough it علىto خصبٍabundance وَريفِlush and shady
For through you I dwell in a fertile, spacious garden,
through which I was guided to luxuriant abundance.
ومنand from زَهَراتِblossoms حظِّكَyour fortune فيin ربيعٍspring
ومنand from ثَمَراتِfruits لفظكَyour speech فيin خَريفِautumn
And through the blossoms of your fortune, I am in spring,
and through the fruits of your speech, in autumn.
وكمand how many عاشرتُI kept company with منof عُصَبٍgroups ولكنْand yet
تَخذْتُكَI chose you منfrom among أُلوفهُمُtheir thousands أَليفيmy close companion
And how many groups I have kept company with—but
from their thousands I have chosen you as my close companion.
وماand not أناI منamong رجالكَyour equals فيin القوافيrhymes
وأصلُand the basis اللِّعْبِplay عرفانُknowing الحَريفِthe opponent
And I am no match for you in rhyme,
and the basis of play is knowing one's opponent.
وأنتَand you إذاwhen ركبتَyou mount الصّعبَthe unruly one منْهاamong them
سَبقْتَyou raced ahead إلىto مَداكَyour goal بلادwithout (reading بلا for بلاد) رَدِيفa rider seated behind
And when you mount the unruly one among them,
you race ahead to your goal, without a rider behind you.
وليand I have حَشَفٌshriveled dates وبيand in me تَطْفيفُshort-measuring كيلٍa measure
وهاand here are حَشَفيmy shriveled dates مَعَwith الكَيلِthe measure الطّفيفِscant
And I have shriveled dates, and I give short measure;
and here are my shriveled dates, with the scant measure.
فإنso if تَرْدُدْyou send back عليَّto me فرَهْبتيthen my fear منْof
وإنْand if تُحسنْyou show kindness إليَّto me فَرَغبتيthen my longing فيfor
So if you send it back to me, then my fear is of...
and if you are kind to me, then my longing is for...
