كم من فتىً نابهِ الأخطارِ أَلحقَهُ
بأخملِto the most obscure الناسِpeople ذكراًin repute خُلْقُهُhis temper الشّرِسُharsh
بأخملِ الناسِ ذكراً خُلْقُهُ الشّرِسُ
How many a youth of eminent standing has been consigned
How many a youth of daring deeds is ranked
To the least renowned of men by his harsh temper.
Among the vilest men, for nature made
أماdo you not تَرىsee البَغْلthe mule سوءُugliness الخَلْقِphysical form يَنسِبُهُlinks it
أما تَرى البَغْل سوءُ الخَلْقِ يَنسِبُهُ
إلىto الحَميرِdonkeys ومِنand among أَخوالِهِits maternal uncles الفَرَسُthe horse
إلى الحَميرِ ومِن أَخوالِهِ الفَرَسُ
Do you not see how the mule’s ugly form links it
His temper like the mule's; hast thou not seen
To donkeys, though the horse is among its maternal uncles?
That the mule is related to the ass and horse?
