From beneath the cloud-bank's hem crept

a ray like the edge of a Mashrafi sword.

It renewed the embroidery of love's cloak,

but plunged headlong, swift to fall.

And in the darkness of the clouds' night it brought forth

a radiant morning, soon to pass away.

It is fire, worshipped—not for prayers

to it—and sought, not for warmth.

    Yet its radiance suggests

the flash of Su'da's spotless teeth.

I recalled Najd's arar blossom; scarce

was the arar's fragrance after dusk.

And my longing behind my ribs was renewed

by the dwelling's decay, after I had reined it in.

And who can bring me Su'da, when between me and her—

veiled as she is beyond a far-off reach—

lie the crow's cawing and the wolves' barking,

and lizard-hunting and the camels' swift strides?

Their beards are stripped away by blows,

and their jaws keep you from beating them.

They fling their legs like arrows,

and their frames spring forward like bows,

through a trackless waste, the innards of whose waterholes

complained to the riders of the buckets' blows.
