By God, what a youth! His cloak was borne
by my shoulder when my resolve grew firm.

His clouds of bounty weep; his cheerful face smiles,
revealing a brow of moonlike form.

إلاّexcept لعُودَيْfor the two timbers of منبرٍa pulpit وسَريرِand a throne
No womb set him down upon the earth's back
save for the twin timbers of pulpit and throne.

My mother suckled him, and my father placed him
at the head of kingdoms, after the wet nurse's lap.

خيشومُهُhis nose يفديكَmay ransom you كُلُّevery عَبيرِperfume

ألاّthat ... not أَشُقَّI split open صِماخَهُhis ear canal بِزَئيريwith my roar

Does the enemy, having overstepped his bounds, suppose
that I will not split his ear with my roar?

And my hand is my helper, and my sword my forearm;
and the spear is my back, and the spearhead my support.

So let the envious multiply their talk about me,
like dogs howling to one another with snarls.

Behold, I am indeed a camel stallion whose pasture was plundered
by mangy camels; so I raged, rumbling with a bellow.
