The base man is not ennobled by arraying himself
No honor comes to the base man from being clad
The base man is not ennobled by donning
in wealth’s crown and brocade;
by wealth in a crown and fine brocade —
a crown and brocade afforded by wealth.

and has the hoopoe escaped its own stench
and did the hoopoe ever escape its stench
And has the hoopoe escaped its stench
by dressing itself in brocade and a crown?
by donning the brocade and the crown?
by wearing brocade and a crown?
