للهِBy God! أيُّwhat جذرٍfawns (apparently intended; the written word literally means ‘root’) يومَon the day of النّوىparting
للهِ أيُّ جذرٍ يومَ النّوى
أَودَعْنَthey deposited منِّيof mine فيin الجَنانِthe heart جُنوناmadness
أَودَعْنَ منِّي في الجَنانِ جُنونا
By God, what fawns, on the day of parting,
What root did Allah place in me on the day I was created,
Left madness in my heart!
That deposited madness within me in the gardens,
لوif لمnot يكُنَّthey were جآذراًfawns ماnot سُمِّيتْwere called
لو لم يكُنَّ جآذراً ما سُمِّيتْ
شَعَراتُهُنَّtheir strands of hair علىupon الرُّؤوسِthe heads قُروناhorns
شَعَراتُهُنَّ على الرُّؤوسِ قُرونا
Had they not been fawns, none would have called
If it were not deeply rooted it would not have been called,
Their locks upon their heads ‘horns.’
Their hair strands upon heads as horns.
