    Springtime passes over me,

Yet life is not sweet, nor the cup bitter.

For its celestial spheres revolve in defiance of me,

And its teats yield milk in opposition to me.

I am made to swallow the misery of its colocynth,

And I am denied the pleasure of its honey.

And I drink from my eye what harms me,

And I eat from my liver what hurts me.

And my tears are like the sea, with billows rising high,

And salt has been sprinkled into my eye's water.

My days have become clad in black garments,

Yet I and my nights were once radiant.

I spend the morning smelling a rose from the cheek,

And the evening drawing musk from the temple.

Nor is faith kept with me—and where is loyalty?—

By any true friend among all mankind.

And among the things that pain a noble man is that

    Every person is called noble.
