وساقٍand a cupbearer سَقانيgave me to drink فيin أرقِّthe thinnest زُجاجةٍglass
مورّدةًrose-hued منfrom نُورهاits radiance النارُfire تُقْتَبسْis kindled
And a cupbearer gave me, in the thinnest glass,
rose-hued wine, from whose radiance fire is kindled—
كماjust as اسْتعبرَwept المعشوقُthe beloved وهوwhile he was مصعّدٌheaving upward
لأنفاسِهِhis sighs والدَّمعُand the tears فيon خدِّهِhis cheek احتْبسwere held back
as when the beloved wept, heaving up
his sighs, while tears stood still upon his cheek.
فذوَّبso melted لونَthe color الخدِّof the cheek تَسعيرةُthe blazing heat الحَشاof the heart
وأجمدَand congealed ذَوبَthe molten flow الدمعِof tears تصعيدةُthe upward heaving النّفَسْof breath
The heart’s blaze melted the color of his cheek,
and a rising sigh congealed the molten tears.
