ولستُand I am not منof عبدِʿAbd (servant) شَمسِShams (sun)

yet I am not of ʿAbd Shams.
إنِّيindeed, I لأعشقُI truly love passionately شيءٍsomething
وحّقِّand by the right of مَنthe One who شَقَّparted خَمسيmy five fingers
Indeed, I am in love with something—
and by the One who parted my five fingers—
هيفاءَa slender-waisted woman تَتركُshe leaves يَوميmy day
بالهجرِthrough estrangement حاسِدَenvious of أَمْسيmy yesterday
a slender-waisted woman who leaves my day
through estrangement, envying my yesterday.
ولاand not تُباليshe cares جفاءًout of coldness
أسُرَّwhether it was gladdened يوميَmy day أَمor سِيwas saddened (poetically shortened)
And in her coldness she does not care
whether my day is gladdened or saddened.
