خضَمّa vast sea سَخاgave generously وهزبرٌand a lion سَطاattacked fiercely
خضَمّ سَخا وهزبرٌ سَطا
وسيفٌand a sword مَضىcut through وسنانٌand a spearhead صَدَعْcleaved
وسيفٌ مَضى وسنانٌ صَدَعْ
A vast sea that gave generously, and a lion that struck;
The clamor of battle, and boastful threats,
And a sword that cut through, and a spearhead that cleaved.
A sword now sheathed, a blade now dulled.
تَفاوتَdiffered إخوانُهُhis brothers والخوانُand the dining table
تَفاوتَ إخوانُهُ والخوانُ
يَرْفَعُhe raises هذاthis one وهذاand this one يَضَعْhe sets down
يَرْفَعُ هذا وهذا يَضَعْ
His brothers and the dining table differed:
His brothers differ, for good or ill-
He raises the former and sets the latter down.
One rises high, one lower dwelled.
