بحرٌ إذا ما نَزَفوه طَما
طَودٌa mighty mountain إذاwhenever ماemphatic particle زَلزلوهُthey shook it اطْمأنْstood firm
طَودٌ إذا ما زَلزلوهُ اطْمأنْ
A sea that swells whenever they drain it.
A sea, if they make it bleed, rages,
A mountain that stands firm whenever they shake it.
A mountain, if they shake it, settles,
كالماءِlike water والنارِand fire جَرىflowed والتظىand blazed
كالماءِ والنارِ جَرى والتظى
كالريحِlike the wind والتُّربand earth سَماrose high وارجَحَنْand settled heavily
كالريحِ والتُّرب سَما وارجَحَنْ
Like water and fire, he flows and blazes.
Like water and fire it flowed and flared,
Like wind and earth, he soars and settles heavily.
Like wind and dust it rose and swayed.
