تقولُshe says سُلَيمىSulayma والمشيبُand gray hair قناعُهاher veil
تقولُ سُلَيمى والمشيبُ قناعُها
أَتصرمwill you sever? منٍّيfrom me حبلَa cord ودٍّof love وصلتُهI joined it
أَتصرم منٍّي حبلَ ودٍّ وصلتُه
Sulayma says, with gray hair as her veil:
The silver locks now ornament Sulayma’s head
Will you sever from me the cord of love I joined?
Now that old age has sapped the cable of my love
فإنfor if ينقطعis cut off وَرْديmy rose فأنتَthen you قطفتَهُyou plucked it
فإن ينقطع وَرْدي فأنتَ قطفتَهُ
وإنand if يبلُwears out ديباجيmy brocade فأنتَthen you ابتذلتَهُyou wore it threadbare
وإن يبلُ ديباجي فأنتَ ابتذلتَهُ
For if my rose is gone, it is you who plucked it.
If I forsake my passion, ‘twas you who broke the bond
And if my brocade wears out, it is you who wore it threadbare.
If my satin robe is soiled, ‘twas you who cheapened it
