منَof القومthe people الذينَwho إذاwhen استُمدّواthey were asked for aid
منَ القوم الذينَ إذا استُمدّوا
ندىًbounty فضحواthey put to shame الخضمَّthe vast ocean المُسْتَمدّاdrawn upon for aid
ندىً فضحوا الخضمَّ المُسْتَمدّا
Of those people who, when asked
Among the people are those who when asked
for bounty, put the vast ocean drawn upon to shame.
For help, they expose the one asking.
فلاso not ودّواthey wished لرأسfor the head of العزِّglory شَجّاًa head wound
فلا ودّوا لرأس العزِّ شَجّاً
ولاnor شَجّواthey mingled بدارِwith the abode of الهُونِhumiliation وُدّاaffection
ولا شَجّوا بدارِ الهُونِ وُدّا
So they wish no wound upon the head of glory,
They have no love for the glorious leader
nor mingle affection with the abode of humiliation.
Nor affection for the abode of disgrace.
