يعقوبُYa‘qub عَمِّيmy paternal uncle وغيرُand no بدِعٍstrange thing
يعقوبُ عَمِّي وغيرُ بدِعٍ
لوif عمَّfilled قَلبيmy heart ولاءُdevotion to عمِّيmy paternal uncle
لو عمَّ قَلبي ولاءُ عمِّي
Ya‘qub is my uncle, and it would be no wonder
My uncle Ya'qub is unique and incomparable,
if devotion to my uncle filled my heart.
If my heart's affection for my uncle were to become apparent,
وُدِّيmy affection لهُfor him كالصبّاحِlike the morning عارٍbare
وُدِّي لهُ كالصبّاحِ عارٍ
ولاand not أُورِّيI equivocate ولاand not أُعَمِّيI obscure
ولا أُورِّي ولا أُعَمِّي
My affection for him is bare as the morning;
My love for him would shine at dawn like the rising sun,
I neither equivocate nor obscure my meaning.
I would neither hide it, nor pretend not to see.
