Your breeze greeted me until it nearly brought me to life.

O Tunis of delight, O green expanse of squares.

It traveled gently and brought greetings to

one worn by love for you, far from home and deprived.

Longing grew fierce in me and mastered my endurance.

I began to hide it until it nearly hid me.

Sometimes I resist sleep, and sometimes it resists me.

clouds of good fortune that please them and please me.

the breast of joy that still gives me drink.

the fragrance of its breath among the aromatic plants.

ask there for whatever you wish, and it comes at once.

And Jaafar—may its branches never wither, and may

the wine of al-Zarrajin water the mouths of its flowers.

over the sea’s green or the gardens’ green.

The graceful women frolic and the gazelles swim, while

there is neither a lizard on land nor a fish in the sea.

since her beauty takes the place of presenting proofs.

    black and gaping like snakes.

noble men upon fine, auspicious horses.

Greetings, greetings, O home of rulers!

refuge for every poor stranger far from home!

for the city’s lords, the masters of its offices.

O dwellings of the bold and of the devout,

O landmarks of song and calls to prayer!

You are truly the dwellings, unlike those of one

who says, ‘O breeze from the direction of Darin.’

and a station needing no explanation—

may he remain peerless in honor, forever wearing

happiness from the God of ‘Be’ and it is.
