Is it magic that has stolen forth from a gazelle's neck,

Or the sweet fragrance from the breeze,

Or the poetry that has grown subtle in meaning

And become an enchantment for the sound mind?

Yes, the pearls of eloquence have appeared

On the neck of the parchment, in a finely strung necklace.

And its beauty has sharpened a dull poetic gift,

Drawing it toward a sound meaning.

And but for that, my reed pen would not have stirred,

Nor would any offspring have been seen from a barren one.

So, O you whose poetry has become for my mind

Like the full moon's light for the pitch-dark night,

May greetings reach you for as long as

The doves of the great trees sing upon a straight bough.
