I offer greetings to the most honored presence,

And single out the company of beloved masters.

And I wish I had been the one offering greetings, kissing

The door and thresholds in reverence for his majesty.

The eloquent verse reached me and stirred me,

With the stirring of a breeze, and heightened my delight.

And it revived the spirit and sent my gaze roaming

In a garden clad in golden robes.

Verse like a necklace's stringing; beneath it lies beauty:

Its meaning, like the beauty of water beneath bubbles.

And as for Ibn al-Murahhal, Malik, O my master,

And his verse, so lofty as to inspire admiration—

I know nothing of all this, by your life.

May you ever enjoy favor and a goodly return,

And may you remain a refuge for noble pursuits, where shelter is sought

Forever at your side by those of understanding.
