I greet you with the greeting of one yearning and love-stricken,

and mingle my shed tears with blood.

And I weep for you until the clouds know that they—

by your worth—have left so many gaps unmended.

And I sacrifice prized maidens from the virgin creations of my thought,

more delicate than Tasnim, not beasts with hoof-pads.

After Abu Kaf, can tears cease,

and can a mouth, after him, enjoy a smile?

I commune with you—not because I think you my rescuer,

but as a lover who hovers nearby communes.

You left the lofty virtues after your departure; indeed, they are

widows, beating their faces at times and slapping them.

And who will accomplish great endeavors, if achieving them proves hard,

with ease, when anyone but you, baffled, surrenders?

And who will resolve the mighty tasks,

with thought as keen as the edge of an Indian sword?

And who is there for one broken by time, who comes to you seeking refuge,

to whom you say, 'At your service, at your service—so be safe'?

And who will adorn the gathering whose adornment you are,

when you are absent, or lead the vast army?

I am bereaved—alas for my grief and my long suffering!

And I parted from the purest and most generous of those I have known.

You went before us and submitted willingly to God,

and journeyed, having turned toward the best destination.

And you left us wasted by grief and sorrow

for you; and those you left behind are blameless.

So the days darkened, and their face grew dusty,

and they had been—and those you left behind are blameless—

nights that were pearls of joy,

in which time showered goodness without hesitation.

You tread the Pleiades beneath your sandals in your exaltation,

and at evening embroider upon the blossoms of the Milky Way.

    وَفي سائِرِ الآمالِ حُكِّمتَ فاِحكُمِ

    And you pluck every ripe bloom from the flowers of desire;

and over all hopes you have been made arbiter—so judge!

It passed among us a thirst-quenching cup of safety,

and afterward made us swallow a cup of bitter colocynth.

So you departed; how many wept with the eyelids of a young gazelle

for you, and how many wept with the eyelids of a lion!

So cursed be time: if it lends you an hour,

it attacks with a hand bearing a bow and arrows.

For how often it has torn apart inseparable companions, like Jadhima's two boon companions,

and how often it has parted Malik and Mutammim!

And how often it has scattered what was strung together, deafened, and silenced!

And such has been its way since the days of 'Ad and Jurhum.

May God pardon what has passed on its way,

and meet you with glad tidings and gracious honor.

And we hope He will grant you pardon and mercy,

and hear from us long prayers for mercy upon you.

Upon you be God's peace—the greeting of one grieving

for what has passed of your former days.
