Good fortune has come, bearing pearls of praise,

To suffuse your august presence with joy,

And single out your person for delight in what

We had yearned to attain for ages.

Time delayed it like a beloved woman's promise,

Until you beckoned to it, and it answered openly.

And it came like virtues with which you were endowed,

Attesting that your eminence is of the purest mettle.

It filled hearts with joy and sounded sweet in

Our ears, and brought delight to our eyes.

Friend, do you see anything but a smiling mouth

That, but for awe, would say, "Cupbearer, give us drink"?

Or anyone but a jubilant man, through whose beloved flowed

    The rainwater, so he rejoiced proudly and swayed;

Or anyone but one spellbound by a scene's adornment,

    Reciting the Book's chapters there for protection;

Or anything but throngs going forth at evening and morning—

    Some hopeful, some saying "Amen," and some made secure;

Or anyone but one praying for the minister and his son,

And for his family to attain the utmost of their hopes?

The grand lord, the noble chieftain Mustafa,

Captivator of gazes, praise, and eyes,

Through character traits, virtues, and bounties

Whose tracing has baffled the skilled and accomplished.

Behold his exalted person, and turn from everyone

Who recounts praise through reports and chains of transmission,

And from anyone likened to the full moon, or to rain, or

To the sea and precious, gathered pearls.

The minister's traits surpass all that; my proof

My Lord has made plain to sight; that suffices us.

O girdle of sovereignty's waist, pearl of its crown,

O its lasting treasure, most precious and prized,

And the bond of its assembly, and the sword in its right hand,

And its soaring, exalted, most inviolate pride,

May the pearl of a royal necklace gladden you, embraced by

The noble stallion—a beauty who met one more handsome:

The most fortunate, most pleasing, the unsheathed sword,

The most splendid and perfect of all who bear names and bynames,

Under fortune's ascendant, fitting that there should appear

Their offspring, like the stars in radiance.

And for two days you poured forth bucketfuls of your bounty

Among those set free, and all of them gained wealth.

And overwhelmed them with generosity before they asked.

God bless you! What if they had said, "Give us"?

And for couples you mended what had hindered them

From wearing wealth's robes—the garment of hardship.

And restored unity, purely for the Guardian,

Which now openly proclaims gratitude to you among creation.

The living rejoiced in it within their courtyards,

And through it joy spread to the departed.

May He who gave you a pleasing character reward you,

And He is fully able; be certain of this.

And here is a radiant ode for you; were they to ask her,

"Who triumphed on the day of joy?" she would say, "I."

The envy of her co-wives did her no harm, since she came

From the foremost of servants, soundly built,

Reciting your glory, ancient and recent,

For my mind had learned from your eminence.

Remain, my lord, in blessing and happiness,

As long as the singer recites poetry and sets it to song,

By Muhammad, and by his family, and by his Companions,

And by those who, following their path, attained their hopes.
