قَسَماًI swear بِمَنby Him who خَلَقَcreated الكَواكِبِthe stars وَالسَماand the sky
ماnot حِلتُI turned away حيناًfor a moment عَنfrom وِدادِكُمlove for you وَماand not
I swear by Him who created the stars and the sky:
Not for a moment have I turned from loving you, nor...
فَلِمَthen why المُحِبّthe lover يُجُبّcuts out قَلبَthe heart of مُحِبِّهِthe one who loves him
وَيَريشُand fletches مِنfrom نَبعِnabʿ-tree wood القَطيعَةِestrangement أَسهُماarrows
Why, then, does a lover cut out the heart of the one who loves him
And fletch arrows from the nabʿ wood of estrangement?
وَبَذَلتُand I gave فيfor أَغراضِكُمyour wishes فَوقَmore than الَّذيthat which
فيwithin الوِسعِcapacity حَتّىuntil خِلتُI thought أَنthat لَنwould not أَتهَماI be accused
And I gave to fulfill your wishes more than what
Was within my power, until I thought I would not be accused.
وَحَسِبتُand I thought أَنَّكَthat you لاnot تَقولُsay مواجِهيto my face
قَدindeed صَحَّproved well-founded يأسيmy despair مِنof وِصالِكَunion with you مِثلَماjust as
And I thought you would not say to my face:
My despair of union with you has proved well-founded, just as...
